about
Alexandra Torres (b. 1961) is a painter, draftsman, and photographer whose work spans figure studies, landscapes, flowers, and equine-inspired paintings.
Raised in New York City, she was immersed in art from an early age under the tutelage of her father, the painter Horacio Torres. She studied art history at New York University while attending classes at the Art Students League.
Her studies focused in a precise, Ingres-inspired line. Observed classical and Renaissance art, learning the tonal richness and compositional structure of the masters.
Over time, her elegant human figures morphed into comprising fluid surreal, muscular creatures, erotic and dreamlike. Drawn in a carefully measured interplay of monochrome and line.
Her large-scale works explore the perception of the body, its resilience, as well as its fragility. Each painting comes forward, autonomous, voluminous, a sensory oneiric vision dripping with emotive motion and energy.
Her subjects are based on sketches from life, often found with a sketchbook in hand in a figure drawing group or at the racetrack or a horse training center. Torres lives and works in Ocala and Pittsburgh.
